About Tornado

The Great Central Railway was once a famous stomping ground of London & North Eastern Railway-designed pacific express engines like Tornado.

The locomotive has many claims to fame. It was the first major steam locomotive constructed in Britain for decades when it was completed in 2008, operated at 100mph on the mainline and appeared in the Paddington 2 movie. It is built to the LNER A1 Peppercorn design.

1st Class Observation Saloon

Step back to the golden age of steam with a 1st Class Observation Saloon ticket. Travel up close, right behind the locomotive which relaxing on one of the comfortable sofas or in the traditional arm chairs. With it's large panoramic views, the saloon is certainly a special way to travel!

Points to Note:

  • Sunday 28th only.
  • A very limited number of saloon tickets are available on some departures.
  • Tickets are for a journey only - no catering is included.

Experience the Footplate!

Experience a unique opportunity! We have a very limited number of opportunities to enjoy the return journey right from the heart of the action - up front on the footplate with the driver! Just one person per departure!

You will be able to observe the driver and fireman at work, operating this powerful locomotive for the entire journey from Ruddington Fields.

Includes two ordinary travel tickets so you and your guest can travel on the train together either before or after your footplate journey.

Points to Note:

  • You will be observing and will not actually drive the locomotive. You must follow any instructions provided by the footplate crew.
  • You must be 18 or above and have a reasonable level of physical fitness to be able to climb up on to the locomotive from ground level.
  • One individual per time slot, any other visitors in your party travel in the coaches.
